Film Festival screenings Amidst the Covid 19 Pandemic

The festival submission process for Destiny's Road started out rough. We got so many rejections the first round of submissions, with only making the official selection of one film festival and finalist for another.  Although it wasn't what I expected, I was grateful.  It saved my self esteem. I knew I had a good quality film and I thought that most film festivals would recognize that too. After getting some honest feedback at a test screening with fellow film directors from Alliance of Women Directors, I realized that I needed to be more strategic with my submissions.  I shifted my focus from applying to the commercial festivals with A list attachments to niche festivals located in places where I could build an audience for the feature version of my film, which I've already written. Finally,  I started receiving multiple emails that started with "Congratulations."  I still received rejections but not as many as before.  We scre...

Destiny's Road at the Denton Black Film Festival in TX

Destiny's Road is a film about a teenage girl, whose only chance of making it out of poverty is through college, scrambles to recover stolen tuition money before reliant family members catch on to her secret. While in attendance at the Denton Black Film Festival for the  Destiny's Road film premiere, I  had the opportunity to speak on the The Art of Short Filmmaking panel along with other talented filmmakers - Calvin Walter, Jacoby Percy, Lizette Barrera, and moderator, Vaun Monroe. We discussed the unique qualities of short films as well as why emerging filmmakers should embrace this genre.  Destiny's Road screened  at  the Alamo Drafthouse Theater on the final day of the festival.  We had the pleasure of being the opening film for the winner of the best feature documentary, Patrinell The Total Experience .  The two films complimented each other well, both having similar themes of family, hope, and faith.  The audience response to m...

The Making of Destiny's Road

I just completed my 6th short film, Destiny’s Road, as the writer/director/producer. It took a village to pull it off and I’m grateful for the extraordinary crew that made it happen. Film credits are now viewable on IMDB . Check out my tribe! This film is a proof of concept for my feature screenplay of the same name that was recently selected for the Women In Film Financing Intensive, which will take place in a few weeks.  Key takeaways from my experience of making this film in California and advice to filmmakers: 1. It’s cheaper to get worker’s comp insurance from the CA State Fund or a payroll company than an insurance broker. You’ll save several hundreds. 2. Expect the unexpected and plan for it, last minute fixes can be costly. Allow at least 5% in the budget for contingencies.  3. With the California AB5 law, most crew members are classified as employees and not independent contractors, so you’ll have to pay taxes on their salaries. It's best to use a payroll c...
