Pitching My Heart Out!

Traci Carter (Producer) and I (Director) were selected as 1 of 12 teams (6 documentary and 6 narrative) to represent my narrative feature screenplay, Destiny's Road, at the Women In Film Financing Intensive , sponsored by Women In Film and Sundance Film Institute. We spent two days workshopping our budget and pitch with industry mentors in order to prepare us for a day of pitching with film financiers. We did an amazing job pitching the film. The nerves and adrenaline worked in our favor.  Only time will tell if we secured the green! 2019 Women In Film Financing Intensive Fellows Kameishia Wooten (Director) and Traci Carter (Producer) after they rocked their pitch at the Women In Film Financing Intensive. Got a feature film that needs financing, learn more about the Women In Film Financing Intensive here .

The Making of Destiny's Road

I just completed my 6th short film, Destiny’s Road, as the writer/director/producer. It took a village to pull it off and I’m grateful for the extraordinary crew that made it happen. Film credits are now viewable on IMDB . Check out my tribe! This film is a proof of concept for my feature screenplay of the same name that was recently selected for the Women In Film Financing Intensive, which will take place in a few weeks.  Key takeaways from my experience of making this film in California and advice to filmmakers: 1. It’s cheaper to get worker’s comp insurance from the CA State Fund or a payroll company than an insurance broker. You’ll save several hundreds. 2. Expect the unexpected and plan for it, last minute fixes can be costly. Allow at least 5% in the budget for contingencies.  3. With the California AB5 law, most crew members are classified as employees and not independent contractors, so you’ll have to pay taxes on their salaries. It's best to use a payroll c...

2018 Don't Owe Me A Thing

While prepping my good luck meal for the New Year (black eyed peas, collard greens, cornbread, etc.), I felt inspired to blog a reflection of my 2018 journey.   This year marked my 10 th year LAnniversary.     Whew – It’s been a ride! I’m still here and standing strong! My path has not been linear and at most times unclear. Nonetheless, the destination has not changed since I realized filmmaking was how I wanted to make my living - a desire I believe God placed in my heart.   Although the route has taken longer than expected, each year I receive little victories that confirm I’m on the right path. This year was met with challenges and triumphs.     I left my job of five years to work for an amazing company that would elevate my career and provide personal growth.   A few weeks into the position, I got the devastating news that my Grandmother passed from her battle with dementia.    Despite knowing this day would come, no...
